Be a Coxswain A coxswain is an individual who navigates and steers commercial vessels, small in size within specified nautical miles from the shore, which varies depending upon the certificate held by them. Two types of certificates available under a Coxswain’s course include the Coxswain NC1 (higher grade) certificate and the Coxswain NC2 (lower grade) certificate. Coxswain NC1 Certificate is needed if an individual wants to be the commander of a commercial vessel that is 12 meters long and operates 15 nautical miles to sea, has passengers on board, and a diesel engine capacity of less than 500 kW. Coxswain NC2 Certificate is needed if the individual wants to be a commander of a vessel less than 12 meters long and diesel engine capacity of less than 100 kW and has no passengers on board.
