Be a Coxswain
A coxswain is an individual who navigates and steers commercial vessels, small in size within specified nautical miles from the shore, which varies depending upon the certificate held by them.
Two types of certificates available under a Coxswain’s course include the Coxswain NC1 (higher grade) certificate and the Coxswain NC2 (lower grade) certificate.
Coxswain NC1 Certificate is needed if an individual wants to be the commander of a commercial vessel that is 12 meters long and operates 15 nautical miles to sea, has passengers on board, and a diesel engine capacity of less than 500 kW.
Coxswain NC2 Certificate is needed if the individual wants to be a commander of a vessel less than 12 meters long and diesel engine capacity of less than 100 kW and has no passengers on board.
Scope of a Coxswain’s Responsibilities
- Maneuvering and steering small vessels
- Checking for weather conditions and talking to relevant authorities before sailing on high seas
- Supervising and giving appropriate instructions to crew members
- Keeping passengers updated and providing safety information
- Maintenance of logbooks
- Making use of maritime techniques and tools
- Transmitting navigational data using a marine radio
- Mooring and unmooring sea vessels
- Dealing with vessel issues related to pump and propulsion systems and diesel engines
- Successful handling of emergencies
Steps to be undertaken for Getting the Coxswain Ticket
- Completion of initial enrolment of Coxswain course and fulfilling online assignments and activities centered on the knowledge required of a Coxswain. The estimated time for completion is about 35 self-study hours and can be done online from any source.
- Completion of a pre-course project centered on learning from online homework. The estimated time for completion is about 4 to 5 hours.
- Join the 2-day Coxswain practical training and assessment course and ensure completion of course assessments.
- Submit an application to AMSA on completing your Coxswain course successfully.
- Successful completion of the training course entitles the individual to receive the ‘Coxswain Grade I or II’ Certificate in Maritime Operations.
