Which Deckhand courses do you need?
If you’re interested in the superyacht industry, you’ll find it an exciting source of employment, which is why crew-training courses are required when you’re on board. When you start your career in the maritime industry, or you’re interested to move further in the yachting profession, the right knowledge and training ensure the crew members have the critical skills. If you’re working as a crew member on the superyacht, you want two obligatory certifications for the profession:
STCW Basic Safety Training
This is the compulsory qualification mandated by the crew who want to work on the charter yacht or commercial yacht longer than twenty-four metres.
ENG1 Seafarer Medical Certificate
This is required by the United Kingdom medical examination that proves your competence to work at the sea. MCA-approved doctors issue the applicants with the ENG1 Medical Certificate.
Which designation are you eligible for?
The stewardess or steward cares for the yacht interiors and guests, along with a chief stew who leads the junior and assistant stews. To work as the stew, you need the minimum requirement of the ENG1 Medical Certificate and STCW Basic Safety Training qualification. Other deckhand certificates include the STCW Proficiency in Medical First Aid, VHF Radio Short Range Certificate (GMDSS/DSC), PWC Personal Watercraft Proficiency, MCA Human Element, Leadership and Management (HELM) at Operational Level, PYA Guest Program, STCW Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats, RYA Powerboat Level 2 and MCA Proficiency in Designated Security Duties (PDSD).
Yacht engineers manage the boat’s inner workings, which includes performing repairs and maintenance as needed. They must have the ENG1 Medical Certificate and STCW Basic Safety Course Deckhand certificates, while they learn experience when they’re working as Small Vessel 2nd Engineer or CoC of Y4 after three years on the yacht.
Yacht chefs purchase and prepare food for the guests and crew, which is they need solid experience of creating extraordinary dishes learnt from a previous yacht or hotel. Apart from the ENG1 and STCW Basic Safety Training, yacht chefs must complete the Ships Cook Assessment when they’re cooking for ten crew members. They should also maintain hygiene and hygiene certificates like the HABC Level Two and Three and the Level Three Diploma in Professional Cookery.
