How to get a boat driving licence

A boat licence is an official permission by the state for boating. Boat licences are usually voluntary. They can be obtained for personal enjoyment, for commercial use, to fish, to water ski and more. Each state determines the requirements for operating a powerboat, sailboat or personal watercraft (PWC) on the waters in its jurisdiction, and most require some sort of boating safety and education certificate.

Follow these simple steps to get your boating licence in Australia.

Step 1:

Determine what kind of boat licence you need. Most states require boaters to have a personal watercraft (PWC) licence if they’re using a personal watercraft. All states require boat operators to be at least 16 years old, and all states require boat operators to have a boat licence.

Step 2:

Complete a boating safety course. Each state has its own requirements for boat safety and education courses, so check with your state before enrolling in a course.

Step 3:

Get your boat licence. Once you’ve completed your boating safety course, you’re ready to get your boating licence. Depending on the state you live in, you may only need to present the boat safety course certificate and pay a fee. But other states may have additional requirements.

Step 4:

Call your state’s boating department to ask if there are other requirements.

Step 5:

Once you get your car licence, make sure to display it on your vessel.

How much is a boating licence in Australia?

Typically, boat licences cost anywhere from $100 to $1500. Paying the fee to get your license is a small price to pay for the freedom that comes with operating a boat. In some states, you can get a discount on boat insurance if you complete a boating safety course.

The sailboat licence: If you want to rent, charter or operate a sailboat, most states require you to have a sailboat licence. Once you get your boat licence, the boating laws in your state require all boat operators to abide by those boating laws at all times. Boating is an enjoyable pastime that’s fun for the whole family, but it’s crucial to know the latest boat safety regulations before you begin operating your boat.
